What 45 Years of Triathlon Has Taught Me

What 45 Years of Triathlon Has Taught Me

These two photos were taken 21 years apart.

The one on the left was at the 2005 Age Group World Championships in Honolulu, racing for Australia.

The one on the right was taken just a few months ago at the Moreton Bay Triathlon.

A lot has changed in those 21 years.

I've got a few more wrinkles, a little less hair, and recovery definitely takes longer than it used to.

But looking at these photos got me thinking…

What have I actually learned after more than 45 years in this sport?

Lesson 1 — Consistency Beats Intensity

When I was younger, I thought every session had to hurt.

Now I know it's the sessions you keep showing up for, week after week and year after year, that make the biggest difference.

You don't need the perfect training plan.

You need consistency.

Lesson 2 — Recovery Is Training

This is probably the biggest lesson I've learned after 50.

Recovery isn't being lazy.

Recovery is where you actually get stronger.

  • Sleep
  • Strength work
  • Mobility
  • Easy days

They're just as important as the hard sessions.

Lesson 3 — Fitness Comes and Goes, Character Stays

I've had great races.

I've had terrible races.

I've been selected for World Championships.

I've also had injuries and DNFs.

None of those moments define you.

What defines you is whether you get back up and keep going.

Lesson 4 — Stop Comparing Yourself

When you're younger, you compare yourself with everyone.

Now…

I'm only racing the person I was yesterday.

The goal isn't to beat everyone else.

The goal is to become a better version of yourself.

Lesson 5 — Longevity Is the Real Goal

I don't want to be the fastest 57-year-old for one season.

I want to still be swimming, riding and running when I'm 70…

Maybe even 80.

Longevity has become far more important than chasing one result.

Lesson 6 — Don't Wait Until You're Fit to Start

If you're reading this and you're over 50 thinking…

"Maybe I've left it too late…"

You haven't.

I see so many people waiting for the perfect time.

There isn't one.

Start today.

Walk if you have to.

Ride around the block.

Swim one lap.

Just begin.

Closing

When I look at these two photos…

I don't really see someone who's got older.

I see someone who's learned.

Someone who still loves the sport just as much today as he did 21 years ago.

Maybe even more.

Because these days…

It's no longer about proving anything.

It's about enjoying the journey.

If you're over 50 and thinking about starting triathlon — or starting again — I hope this shows you that your best years aren't necessarily behind you.

In many ways…

They might just be ahead of you.
