More Than a Trophy: What This Award Really Means

More Than a Trophy: What This Award Really Means

There are moments in sport that mean far more than crossing the finish line first.

Last weekend I was fortunate enough to receive an Outstanding Achievement award from the Redcliffe Triathlon Club. On the surface, it's a small trophy. But for me, it represents something much bigger than that.

It represents the journey.

If you'd told me a few years ago that I'd be standing on that stage after everything that's happened, I'm not sure I would have believed you.

The Long Way Back

Like many people over 50, life became busy. Career, family and everyday responsibilities slowly took priority over training. Fitness wasn't gone, but it certainly wasn't where I wanted it to be. I found myself carrying more weight than I should have, wondering if my best racing days were behind me.

Instead of accepting that, I decided to do something about it.

I committed to training consistently again — not to relive the past, but to become the best version of myself today.

The results didn't happen overnight.

There were early mornings, countless swim sessions, long rides, hard runs and plenty of days where motivation wasn't easy to find. There were races that went well, races that didn't, and lessons learnt every step of the way.

A Season to Remember — and a Setback That Stung

Last season was one of the most rewarding I've had. I managed to finish on the podium in every triathlon I entered, won my Queensland Triathlon Series age group, and earned selection to represent Australia again.

Then came Ironman Cairns.

Months of preparation came to an abrupt end when I tore my calf and was forced to withdraw from the race. It was my first DNF in decades, and if I'm honest, it hurt.

But setbacks have a way of teaching us lessons that success never can.

The injury reminded me that sport isn't just about results. It's about resilience, patience and the willingness to start again when things don't go to plan.

Back in the Arena

Today I'm back in structured training. Every swim, bike ride and run is another small step towards the next goal. Progress isn't measured by one session or one race — it's measured by consistently showing up.

What This Award Really Means

Receiving this award reminded me that people notice more than results.

They notice effort.

They notice persistence.

They notice the athletes who keep turning up, support others, and contribute to their club and community.

That's one of the things I love most about triathlon.

Whether you're chasing a world championship, aiming for your first sprint triathlon, or simply trying to become healthier after 50, we're all out there encouraging one another to be better than we were yesterday.

Thank You

So I'd like to say a genuine thank you to the Redcliffe Triathlon Club for the recognition. It means more than you probably realise.

This little trophy isn't a reminder of what I've achieved.

It's a reminder of what is still possible.

If you're reading this and wondering whether it's too late to start, let me assure you — it isn't.

Your best chapter doesn't have to be behind you.

Sometimes, it's only just beginning.

See you at the next start line.
